It’s become a cliché to suggest that MTV doesn’t play music videos any more – it’s a trap we’ve fallen headlong into in the past. It might be true on the main MTV TV channel, but music videos remain key to its spin-off channels, as well as online. Now MTV is launching something new: Your MTV Top 20. It’s a chart based on how people are watching music videos on its networks, sites and apps around the world, with likes, shares and tweets on the chart’s own site also influencing its rankings. And MTV is also drawing on data from Spotify’s The Echo Nest for artist and song ‘hotness’ to affect its new chart, which is updated in real-time as well as being ‘published’ every Monday. One Direction, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran are currently riding high in the chart, so it’s not a wild departure from other music rankings in the western world. MTV and The Echo Nest are partners of old, having worked together since 2009 on projects including the MTV Music Meter chart, and 2012′s Myspace-ish artist platform Artist.MTV.
